Terra Festivalis: Brazil
The Terra Festivalis section, introduced in 2019, charts the national cinemas that have recently gained global significance (Bulgaria, Israel, Mexico, Portugal). This year, we will focus on Brazilian cinema and showcase the works of the famous art house filmmakers (Kleber Mendonça Filho, Karim Aïnouz, Marcelo Gomes) as well as some new talents (Maya Da-Rin or Carolina Markowicz).
As usual, you may look forward to a great variety of topics, including the integration of indigenous peoples into Brazilian society, life in Brazil under Bolsonaro’s regime or postcolonial traumas. There will also be two LGBTQ+ films that deal with the integration of trans people into the current social system. The final selection covers various genres, dramas, melodramas or black comedy thrillers. Most of the films provide critical reflection of current Brazilian society, its hierarchy or problematic attitudes towards the local minorities.
The contemporary Brazilian art house cinema is often presented at the world’s biggest film festivals. Most of these films were made in co-production with European countries (or other LATAM countries, especially Argentina).
